Foods and nutrients

MyFitnessPal’s database is the larger one, with more than 20.5 million foods including restaurant dishes, so more of what you eat is likely to be in it. It tracks calories, macros, vitamins and other micronutrients.

Cronometer’s is smaller, at more than 1.1 million foods, but it draws on lab-analyzed sources such as NCCDB, verifies branded foods before adding them, and tracks up to 95 nutrients and compounds. If vitamins and minerals are why you track, it goes deeper.

Price and ads

Both are free to start, with ads. MyFitnessPal Premium costs $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year and adds the barcode scanner, Meal Scan, voice logging, data export and no ads. Cronometer Gold costs $10.99 a month or $59.99 a year and adds photo and voice logging, recipe importing, custom charts and no ads; its barcode scanner is free.

Privacy

Both keep your diary in an account. MyFitnessPal’s privacy policy says it engages in targeted advertising, and its App Privacy label lists identifiers and usage data as data that may be used to track you. Cronometer stores your data on servers in the United States, pledges never to sell your personal data, and its label lists contact info, identifiers and usage data.

A third option: Calorie Tape

If you’d rather not have an account at all, Calorie Tape, which we make, keeps your log on your iPhone and works offline. It scans barcodes for free and shows every nutrient a food reports, with no ads. It has fewer nutrients per food than Cronometer, no restaurant dishes, and no recipes, charts or sync. It’s coming soon to the App Store in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Questions

Is Cronometer more accurate than MyFitnessPal?

Cronometer says its data comes from lab-analyzed sources such as NCCDB and that it verifies the branded foods it adds, and it tracks up to 95 nutrients and compounds. MyFitnessPal’s database is larger and includes restaurant dishes, so it’s more likely to have a given food.

Which is cheaper, MyFitnessPal Premium or Cronometer Gold?

Cronometer Gold: $59.99 a year or $10.99 a month, against MyFitnessPal Premium’s $79.99 a year or $19.99 a month, in the US.

Do MyFitnessPal and Cronometer work offline?

Not fully. MyFitnessPal’s help center says its food database needs a connection, though diary changes you make offline sync later. Cronometer’s staff have said it can’t offer an offline mode.
